About AP Studio Art

AP Studio Art is a high level course offered to students who wish to develop their technical artistic skills while creating a solid body of original artwork. Each student will develop artwork in a variety of 2D media that demonstrate a range of skills. Additionally, each student will create a separate set of works that focuses on a theme or subject. Students who take this course will submit a portfolio for AP review in May. This challenging course offers students the potential of earning future college credit while at the New Hartford Senior High School. While the Portfolios are oriented specifically for the AP Studio Art Program, the work may also be for exhibition, for enhancing the college application process, and may be submitted for scholarship considerations. This course is designed for students with strong, independent motivation and a desire to become mature artists. The course runs for the Fall and Spring semesters.

AP Studio Art students will use their Senior year to develop a complex and comprehensive art portfolio that demonstrates their ability and commitment to the Fine Arts. In order to submit an AP Studio Art Portfolio, students will need to complete works of art that fit into three designated categories, as developed by the AP; Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. In order to achieve these goals, the course is broken up into three components; Summer Work, Semester 1, and Semester 2. (The “Summer Work” is not a requirement for registering for AP Art but it is highly encouraged and will greatly benefit your portfolio in May of next year).

Section I: QUALITY (Selected Works) One-third of total score 5 actual works Works demonstrating understanding of drawing in concept, composition, and execution.

Section II: CONCENTRATION (Sustained Investigation) One-third of total score 12 digital images; some may be details Works describing an in-depth exploration of a particular drawing concern. This is the focus for the Fall semester.

Section III: BREADTH (Range of Approaches) One-third of total score 12 digital images; 1 image each of 12 different works A variety of works demonstrating understanding of drawing issues.

These sections show that a minimum of 24 pieces of artwork will be submitted for AP Studio Art assessment in May. The QUALITY section (5 pieces) will be mailed to College Board for judging by professional art panels. The other two sections are submitted digitally. Students are allowed to use artwork that has been created at any point in their high school career, but an emphasis should be placed on work done during Junior/Senior years.

*** Update: Starting in the 2019/20 school year, the AP Studio Art curriculum will change. There will be NO Breadth section! For more details visit the College Board website or see Mr. Vaughn ***
